Gooseberry Falls State Park

Also known as “The Gateway to the North Shore”, Gooseberry Falls State Park is one of Minnesota’s top visited state parks and there is no question as to why.  Hugging the shoreline of Lake Superior, Gooseberry Falls is known for its spectacular views, entrancing waterfalls, and old log and stone structures from the Civilian Conservation Corp.

Filled with forests of evergreen, aspen and birch trees, the hiking trails offer a wonderful view of nature and the surrounding wildlife. There are over 20 miles of hiking trails, part of which stem from the Superior Hiking Trail that passes through the park from the north. 2.5 miles of paved trails are available for biking, jogging, roller- blading and other non rugged terrain activities.

The waterfalls are definitely the biggest draw in Gooseberry Falls State Park.  Flowing down from Gooseberry River; the water winds its way over boulders, around fallen tree limbs and over rocky gorges to create the spectacular views of the falls. The middle and lower falls are ADA accessible and can be accessed from the main part of the park.  Getting to the upper falls can be a challenge but worth the view when you reach the top.

The visitor center has naturalist programs available for kids and adults where you can learn about the wildlife, flora and fauna, and history of the park. They also have activities for kids and a small store with souvenirs.

Camping within the park is very busy.  There are several different campgrounds to choose from for RV’s and tent camping.  Each campground has a picnic area available for guests to use. Pebble Creek campground is the closest to Lake Superior and offers the best views of the sunrise and sunset.  You can watch the moon rise over the lake from an ancient lava flow known as “Picnic Flow”.

If you are looking for a park with plenty of activities for the family, wonderful lake views, and peaceful trails to hike through, Gooseberry Falls State Park is the place to go.
